Kista IP LAN FAQ

Q: How do I get Internet access?
A: First you will need a fiber/TP-converter which you can get from Svenska Bostäder or KTH (for international students renting from KTH).
You will also need a 100 Mbit (minimum) TP-network interface card (NIC) and a TP-cable to connect your computer to the converter. You can buy a NIC and a TP-cable in any computer hardware store (e.g. in Kista Galleria). NICs often cost below 100 SEK.

Q: How do I install the hardware?
A: 1) Plug in one end of the TP-cable in your network interface card and one end into the converter.
2) Attach the power adapter to the wall and to the converter.

3) Attach one end of the optic fibres in the two slots on the converter and the other ends in the sockets on the box on the wall.
(Note: Be CAREFUL - optic fibres are SENSITIVE!)

4) Make sure the little switch on the converter is set to DTE.
If correctly installed, the four green lower indicators (LEDs) will be activated when your computer is on.
(Note: If not all four LEDs are glowing, try loosing, then crossing the optic fibers (in one end only). Some fiber sockets were crossed by mistake during installation.)

Q: How do I configure my e-mail/Why can't I send e-mail with my old account?
A: Most mail servers have restricted relaying of e-mails to users outside of their domain, so you will probably not be able to send e-mails with your old operators account. KistaIP, however, has its own outgoing mail server. Check the support page to find the name of the mail server.

Q: Internet/mail does not work anymore. What has happened?
A: You may have been blocked. Normally you will get a message about this when you try to login, or you will be redirected to a special page.

Alternatively a server could be down. Talk to your neighbours and see if it works for them, if it doesn't, a server is probably down. If one of the servers is down (i.e. mail server or web server), feel free to notify us of the problem so we can remedy it faster. Otherwise you will have to make contact with your Internet provider (currently KTH). Take it easy though, if one of their servers is down they are probably already working on it.
If it works on your neighbours computers the problem probably is on your end of the line (have you installed any new software recently?). Try using another computer (i.e. a friends laptop) and make sure the converter is still working.
Ping is a useful command for network analysis, if you use the command:
ping <IP address>
the computer with that IP should respond to your computer. More information on the ping command should easily be found on the Internet.

Q: I have been blocked, why?
A: Your computer has probably been infected by a network virus. You most likely don't have an effective firewall which is entirely necessary when connected to the Internet today. Antivirus does not protect you from most viruses of this kind but it can detect and stop a large number of other viruses and hopefully at least notify you that you have been infected - if it is updated.
You may also have been blocked due to detection of illegal activity. To regain access to the Internet, please contact the administrator. Its also a good idea to check the support page.

Q: I have noticed that someone is trying to hack my computer, what should I do?
A: If you have the time, energy and knowledge, try to track him down and report the attack to his Internet provider. Install a firewall if you do not have one, some can be downloaded for free on the Internet (more info on this further down).
Some useful tools for tracking malicious users are ethereal, traceroute (linux), tracert (windows). Use antivirus software and make sure you do not have any trojans installed. With firewalls and ethereal you can log the attacks on your computer. A good reason for doing this is that if a hacker is using your computer to hack other computers you have a chance to prove yourself innocent.

Q: Where can I find firewalls and other useful tools?
A:

ping Win/Linux Checking connection
tracert Win Tracing IP addresses
traceroute Linux Tracing IP addresses
winipcfg win98 Check your IP
ipconfig winNT Check your IP
ifconfig Linux Check your IP
