New VIP room manager needed
Our current VIP room manager, Alex, is leaving Kista IP and thus we are now in need of
another able person willing to help out. If you are interested in this, please contact us at
vip_room kistaip.net
Observe that the booking of the VIP room will be closed and
nobody can use the room from Monday, until a new manager is found.

Up, down and up again
Once more this machine was attacked and thus we had to put it offline until the problem was
remedied.
It seems that a vunerability in our (old) version of phpBB forum was used to gain access.
The machine was then used for attacking other computers on the Internet.
Sorry for any inconvenience.

www.KistaIP.net up again
This website was down between Monday and Tuesday. The reason was that the server was attacked and possibly
cracked, and then used for attacking other machines on the Internet. As a security measure a full cleaning
and reinstallation was performed.
Btw: At the same time I also replaced our gateway with a more powerful machine with gigabit interfaces.

Booking VIP room at KistaIP
As you may know; we have a room here at KistaIP referred to as the VIP room.
It is located in the long house with the laundry and is available for
booking by tenants of KistaIP. The room (actually it has a few rooms) is quite large and have a fully equipped kitchen, etc.
The VIP room can be used for parties, meetings, etc.
I have recently implemented an
online booking system
here at the KistaIP web that you now can use to book the VIP room.
You can find the link in the right panel. I hope you find it useful.

Some problems today
Today I found two rouge DHCP servers in the network. Many people reported having problems
due to this, i.e. they did not get public IP addresses from the DHCP server of KistaIP but from
the illegal servers instead.
On top of that trouble we simultaneously got some problems with the KistaIP gateway.
I arranged a temporary solution, so for now you do not need to log in to access the Internet.

Disturbance today
The disturbance in the network today caused everybody to lose their connection to the Internet
and even to our own login server. The source of the problems was tracked to one of the apartments
which consequently was blocked.
Today I also repaired and reinstalled a piece of hardware, which caused a short disturbance.

Another bug removed
Some people reported they would on occation get the message that they were already logged in,
although I thought that bug was already removed. On careful inspection I did find another bug.
Hopefully we'll have no more of this type of problem in the future.

KTH network rules at KistaIP
To all tenants using Internet at KistaIP (1):
Please be aware that since KistaIP gets its Internet connection from KTH (i.e. KTH is our ISP),
all users are subject to the rules of KTH networks. That means, among other things, that no
illegal activities (i.e. viruses, spamming, intrusions, etc) and no sharing of copyright protected material
(i.e. most music, movies, etc) are allowed.
We're working on distributing the rules specific to KistaIP but in the mean time you can find the rules
of KTH at www.kth.se.
Btw. In the future there might be other ISPs to choose from at KistaIP.
In that case the rules of the respective ISP will apply for its users.

Bug removed
I have successfully removed a bug from the login system which caused users to be unable to log in,
on occasion. The user would get the message that she is already logged in.

Power failure
The problems yesterday were caused by a power failure, which led to some problems in the local web server.
Now things should work well again.

Great performance improvement
Yesterday the last Dynarc was finally removed and replaced. As predicted, the heavy packet loss have
been reduced to practically zero, from a crippling 10 - 20 %. The result is a dramatically
improved performance in the network for all users.
Btw: The test account has expired and people are using their individual accounts for Internet access.

Logout and login feature
I've added two new features in the User Profile.
You may now choose to immediately log out any of the instances made with your user.
You may also remotely log in another computer, e.g. if you don't have a internet browser on it.
-- Added 30/8 '04 --
Test account expire
The test account will expire on September 1. Afterwards you'll
have to use your individual account to login.

Mail problem
I just discovered and solved a problem in the mail (smtp) server at KistaIP.
Warning: for aproximately 4 days mails sent through the server was not delivered,
but instead put on queue. All (valid) mails sent during this period should have been
delivered now, but it can't be guranteed. If feeling unsure, it is recommended
to resend your mails.

Lost connection
Today, Thursday, KistaIP and KTH in Kista lost its connection to the Internet.
Supposedly the link between Kista and the main campus was cut accidently.
Luckily, Internet connection was restored in the evening.

New login/password
The new login system is now in place and it is time for all tenants of
KistaIP(1) to get their individual accounts enabled.
The proceedure: Contact Dan or Thomas.
Bring your apartment key and a paper on which you
write your email address (clearly readable). We will send
login and password to your email address, which you then use to login
to your KistaIP user profile.
There you enter in some contact information which will enable your account.
The test account will be disabled soon, so to avoid unnecessary periods of
disconnection it is adviceable to get your account enabled before then.

Back online
www.kistaip.net
is back online, together with the Forum and mail relay. The
login server is working fine and we use a temporary common
user/password to login.
The support mail is currently not used due to heavy spamming,
so we suggest you to use the KistaIP Forum instead.

Reconstruction 2
This Wednesday we will do some work in
the KistaIPnet, which we didn't do the last time. There will be a loss of network connection
during at least a few hours.
Starting from Wednesday, the login system is back. Everybody will have to register and get passwords, but in the
mean time there will be a common account for all. More about this later - stay tuned.

Reconstruction of KistaIPnet
Next wednesday we plan to do a
major reconstruction of the network at KistaIP.
This will take at least one day during which the Internet
connection will be down and possibly the whole network
at KistaIP.
What will happen:
We will replace all of the Dynarc routers (or at least most) with
switches from HP and a Juniper router. There will be both physical and logical changes
in the network at the same time. We will also install a new login server (more about that later).
Please keep in mind that we will be working as fast as we can
to bring the network back up. This is also of interest for you,
because we believe the network will be more stable and perform
better after this is done. Thanks for your patience.

Power failure
Just for the sake of documentation; a few weeks ago there was another
major power failure - taking out most of the western Stockholm region.
As usual, this caused some problems in our network, but I managed to fix it
within a day after the power came back.
