KistaIPnet dismantled
Today we dismantled the KistaIP network and testbed, after ca 6.5 years of continous operation. Only
the webserver and domain will remain. As for the physical site at Kista Alléväg, it will
also be
dismantled within days. Only the buildings nr 8 and 10 will remain, together with the 'stage 2' area
at Kista Alléväg (not connected with KistaIPnet) yet untouched.
For me, having been deeply involved almost from the very
beginning, it is not without a feeling of loss. Running this network has been a
great experience - I've learned a lot, both about dealing with technology and humans. My only regret
is the realization that KistaIPnet could have become even greater with more time and/or resources.
I want to give my personal thanks to all people involved during these years, including KTH staff,
students,
tenants, officers of Svenska Bostäder and others (too many to mention by name).

Another power failure
Monday, ca 16:30, central Stockholm and Kista (at least) experienced another
power failure. Luckily it only lasted a few seconds. Unluckily, it caused a fuse to
trigger at KistaIP. Consequently several apartments lost their network connection until
I could fix it at ca 22:30 yesterday.

The end is near...
As some of you know, the student apartments at KistaIP has been a temporary solution destined
to be removed at some time. Now it is official; the first batch of buildings at KistaIP
will be vacated 1st of June 2007, including my own. The buildings will probably be
removed
shortly after this date so that construction of new industrial/office buildings can begin.

Server crash
A server crashed at Tuesday, causing a network service interruption. I had to
physically access the server to be able to solve the problem,
thus it was not restored until night.
Some people have also experienced (relatively) minor problems even after
Tuesday, as a direct cause.

Electrical problem
At midday Sunday, an electrical problem caused the network equipment to fail.
An electrician was called in and was able to solve the problem. The network
service was restored today at ca 16:00.

Network interruption
A planned network interruption was carried out today. KTH was moving some network
equipment involved with the KistaIP uplink. Connectivity was restored ca 13:50.

VIP room manager wanted
Svebo has decided to open the VIP room again. However, just as before, a person willing to
manage the VIP room is required. Currently no-one is doing that, so the room will remain closed
until someone is. If you are interested in helping out with the VIP room, please contact me.

VIP room closed
Due to the bad condition of the VIP room, Svebo has decided to close it for the rest of
the year. The abuse of the facility (by the tenants/guests borrowing it) has been
extensive
- thus it now require repairs. Another unfortunate result is that the dishwasher (also
in very poor shape) will not be available in the future.

Overheating
For the record; The last Saturday we experienced a network problem during most of the day.
The problem was caused by overheating in a network room at KTH. Therefore the techs were forced to
shut down most of the equipment to solve the problem. Connectivity was restored in the
evening (around 6 pm I think).
--Added 28/8 '06 --
Maintainance tomorrow
Tomorrow around 11:00 there will be a short break in the Internet connection.
This follow-up maintainance work is needed due to the
major problem last week.
--Added 17/7 '06 --
Internet connection restored
Connection was restored at 6 pm.
--Added 11/7 '06 --
Good news
The KTH techs were able to replace the broken hardware. Luckily the problem was not quite as
severe as it seemed at first. Internet connection is ETA to be restored this evening.

Major failure
Today it was verified that the whole Kista node of the Solix network is
down.
KistaIPnet is one of many networks linked to that node. At this time it is unknown
how long it will take to restore the node, but the worst case scenario says many days.
Please read in the forum for details:

Lost connection
It seems we have no connection with KTH (and the Internet) this evening.
At the time of writing this message, I dont know why. I hope the matter will be solved
tomorrow.

Maintainance/repair work
Today service technicians are repairing the broken cooling equipment
of the network room at KistaIP. Network connectivity might be lost for some
or all apartments until the repairs are finished. The network service will
be restored during the afternoon, latest.
--Added 20/6 '06 --
No Internet today
Due to internal relocation at KTH, some network equipment also have to be moved.
Therefore the Internet connection will be down during the day.
We apologize for the inconvenience.
--Added 17/6 '06 --
Problem solved
For the record; the malfunctioning hardware was repaired ca 19th Maj. Since then
it seems also the packet loss problem has disappeared.
--Added 17/6 '06 --
Internet problems
The network problems experienced lately is believed to be caused
by a malfunctioning interface/link at KTH. It seems to be a quite tricky problem, so
there is a high risk that we will continue to have disturbances for some more days.

Giving away monitors
The IT club TweakPoint is moving out of their old club room.
Due to this, several computer monitors are given away for free.
All of them are fully working and 17" CRT.
If you want one, drop a mail to
monitor
kistaip.net
Please note that the number of monitors available are limited.

No Internet connection
Right now there is a problem in the KTH network with the link to the Internet.
The problem is being investigated and hopefully it will be solved shortly.

Hardware replaced
A piece of hardware broke down and short-circuited last Thursday.
A few apartments connected to that equipment had no network connection
while we waited for the replacement hardware. Yesterday evening I installed the new
hardware, thus network connection should now be restored for all.
--Added 27/4 '06 --
Network down Thursday
The network was down from the afternoon Thursday until about
lunch Friday, due to another power failure. My guess is that it is the same electrical
problem that caused the last 2 power failures. The actual cause is not yet confirmed.
--Added 21/4 '06 --
Network down Sunday
A local powerfailure caused all network equipment to go black
for a number of hours during Sunday. All apartments of KistaIP was affected by this.
It was identical in nature to the last one. Svebo has been notified about the problem.
--Added 2/4 '06 --
Maintenance
Some maintenance work, following up on the problems this
Sunday, caused some disturbances in the network service during the day.

Network disturbance at house 12
Work with the new authentication system caused
a disturbance in the network service for tenants of house 12
during the afternoon. It was not possible to authenticate (login)
during that time. The system is now restored.

KTH network down
Today at 13:00 the KTH (KTH-ssvl) network will go down when the power in
the IT-University Forum building is cut due to an electrical problem. The power, and
consequently the Internet access, will likely be gone for the rest of the day.
--Added 25/1 '06 --
Maintenance
I did some maintenance work on the servers today. Sorry for any disturbances.
--Added 23/1 '06 --
Authentication
Today the apartments of house 12 of KistaIP have started using the new auth
system. Disturbances might occur since I will tweak the network if necessary but only house 12
is expected to be affected.
--Added 19/1 '06 --
New authentication system
Initial tests of the new certificate based
authentication
system have been successful. For the next step of deployment, all
apartments of house 12
at Kista Alléväg will be configured to use the system,
starting from Thursday.
All tenants of house 12 should read and follow the instructions
on the Auth/Login
page (the top left link) before Thursday. If you do it later, you risk
loosing your Internet connection until your certificate is accepted.
When a valid certificate has been created you will be accepted as an
authorized user of the
KTH-SSVL.NET Internet service.
Please use KistaIP Forum for
support issues and discussions.
Note: Those of you who created and installed certificates before today - those certs are invalid, since the
root CA has been updated. Simply create and install a new cert instead.

New parking rules
From the start of this new year all parking lots at the Kista Campus
area are uniquely rented per car. I.e. it is only allowed to park in
the parking lot assigned to your car.
Each lot is rented per 3 months. Contact the regional office of Svenska
Bostder for
more info and/or to get a parking lot.

New network experiment
KistaIPnet is about to be updated with the implementation of a new
authentication model for the Open Neutral Network (ONN) design used in
our network. About one year
ago we used a system based on firewalls and a web-login. The new
system is instead based on PKI (certificates) with authentication per
port using
the ieee 802.1x protocol.

testing/expermental phase? In that case, please contact me at:

Media converters for the KTH apts
During the first part of this term many of the new tenants/students
renting from KTH did not
receive any equipment for connecting to the KistaIP network.
This issue have now been resolved
and the result is that the media converters are being mounted in the
apartments, thus freeing
KTH Accommodation from the management of the equipment.
